Searching for Community

We were created for community. From the very beginning, we were created to live in communities…with God and with each other. And yet, in this current age of technology and amazing scientific developments, we have never felt so alone.

I can go days without talking to someone on a deep, soul-connecting level. Oh, I’ve posted to Facebook and Twitter, I’ve blogged and emailed. I’ve even chatted with the grocery store clerk and waved at my neighbor as I pulled into my garage. I’m surrounded by people, by easy methods of communication, and yet I’m isolated by the convenience this age has produced. Deep down, in my heart of hearts, I long to know and be known. Do you feel the same longings?

God’s Word, the Bible, speaks over and over the words I am longing to hear…”I know you. You are loved. I want to have a REAL relationship with you.” Not just anyone, but the God of the Universe is saying this. To me. To you. Don’t believe me? Here’s just a taste, from Psalm 139…

"O Lord, you have examined my heart

and know everything about me.

You know when I sit down or stand up.

You know my thoughts even when I’m far away.

You see me when I travel

and when I rest at home.

You know everything I do.

You know what I am going to say

even before I say it, Lord.

You go before me and follow me.

You place your hand of blessing on my head.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,

too great for me to understand!”

Psalm 139: 1-6 (NLT), emphasis is mine

Not only does God call out to us for a deeper relationship with Him, but He gives us the gift of deep relations here on Earth, if we would just accept them. It was His plan for His followers to gather together – for teaching, for worship, for encouragement, and for spiritual growth. He calls it His body, the Church. Church is not a building you go to, it is the people of God. We gather together for a common purpose, and in gathering find great value.

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

Hebrews 10:25, NIV

So, where are you? Maybe you used to go to church, but something happened and you got hurt. It’s true, Church is made up of people, and people have the potential to hurt. But they also have the potential to bless, and to pour into your life richness and blessings that you do not have when walking alone. Maybe you don’t believe, but you know there has to be something more to life and relationships than what you’ve experienced. Why not give it a try and see?

To know and be known. It’s one of the deepest cries of our hearts. And it is only a heartbeat away…

"But whoever loves God is known by God."

I Corinthians 8:3
